For centuries individuals or societies have used clothes and other body adornment as a form of nonverbal communication to indicate occupation, rank, gender, sexual availability, locality, class, wealth and group affiliation. Fashion is a form of free speech.  It not only embraces clothing, but also accessories, jewellery, hairstyles, beauty and body art. What we wear and how and when we wear it, provides others with a shorthand to subtly read the surface of a social situation. Fashion is a language of signs, symbols and iconography that non-verbally communicate meanings about individuals and groups.  Fashion in all its forms from a tattooed and pierced navel, to the newest hairstyle, is the best form of iconography we have to express individual identity.  It enables us to make ourselves understood with rapid comprehension by the onlooker.

During the mid-19th century, new styles in clothing denoted middle class status. The dark suit, in somber shades of black, grey, or brown, for men connoted authority, responsibility, and respectability. The sailor suit became an essential uniform for middle-class boys. Neo-classicism influenced middle-class women's styles of dress. A respectable, middle class woman did not expose her breasts. They wore their hair in curls or knotted like women in classical statues. Middle-class girls, like princesses, wore bows, ruffles, and pastels as a symbol of their distinctiveness.
Clothing can express emotions. Black is the color of mourning, but it can also be the color of formal evening dress. Black clothing was sometimes associated with the satanic, but also with ministers. Some clothing has become associated with particular people or social groups. Abraham Lincoln is associated with a black mourning suit and stove-pipe hat. Elvis Presley is linked with jeweled white suits. Jackie Kennedy is associated with pink pill box Halston hats and well-tailored, if somewhat boxy, Oleg Cassini suits. Beatniks of the 1950s are symbolized by black turtleneck sweaters. President Jimmy Carter was associated with cardigan sweaters. Ronald Reagan wore a cowboy hat, a symbol of America's frontier heritage and its optimism.

Fashion and style is not simply a description of how well you dress or convey a sentiment through articles of clothing. Fashion is also the way in which you interpret nature, what you perceive as beautiful and or how the world appears around you. In a society dominated by materialism, the actual definition of fashion is shadowed and forgotten. Fashion can be the current way in which you live, the business of creating or studying styles and finally the way in which you act. Nature has its own fashion, it behaves in a way that it perceives as natural – the flowers growing weary each night, the birds puffing and singing glorious little songs, the sky turning from pink to blue and the waves slamming against the shore. In today’s society, the whole ‘oh to be green’ lifestyle has conquered many and has been deemed fashionable as well as physically lucrative. Simply, fashion does not stop at clothing styles or New York Fashion Week; it is much greater and complex than that. Through fashion or through the fashioning of an idea and casting it among the populace, we can raise awareness for abstract or ignored subjects such as emphasis on endangered species, global climate change or American consumerism. It is like anything, it is what you do with it that makes it unique.

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

The 2008 Philippine Fashion Week has marked a new history for the ever developing nation. The immensely skilled fashion designers have shown their virtuosity in this field of art.The creativity of the fashion artist lies not in rhetoric but in making the marvelous silhouettes that ‘say it all’..

Fashion is something we deal with everyday. Even people who say they don’t care what they wear choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day. One certain thing in the fashion world is change. We are constantly being bombarded with new fashion ideas from music, videos, books, and television. Movies also have a big impact on what people wear.

Fashion Tips,")

    1. Try on all of your favorite clothes. Take notes on how they fit and flatter you. Then shop for similar colors,    fabrics, shapes and lengths.
   2.  A great fit can make an outfit, just as a poor fit can break it!
 3.  Show off the trimmest parts of your body by combining a tight fitting piece with a loose fitting one.
 4.  Any color worn head to toe in a clean, unbroken line will produce a dynamically slimming effect.
 5.  Don't worry if separates don't match exactly. Tonal variations are a creative alternative.
 6.  Taller bodies can take larger prints and more contrast.
 7.  The darker a print's background, the slimmer the look.
 8.  Blouses: a collared shirt always gives a torso a few good inches and frames the face handsomely.
 9.  A slim v-neck makes the neck appear longer and is usually very flattering.
10. Boatnecks are great for minimizing waists and hips, while maximizing sexy shoulders.
11. If your legs are fuller inside, try a side slit. If your legs are fuller outside, a mid-front or back slit is a better choice.
  12. Bright colors bring attention to an area - make sure you wear them wisely and only on your most flattering body parts.
